Not a myth. I have a library of wheel references. The tubeless truck wheels were first introduced in 1956. Radials obviously didn't exist then. As radials came into use in the late 60s the manufacturers began to experience wheel failures. I have a 1970 SAE study done for Budd that concluded the failures were related to the increased lateral loads that radials transmit to the rims. As a consequence the wheel companies began to footnote tubeless wheels in their catalogs stating that warranties were voided if radials were used. Over the years the companies listed and coded the products that were radial approved. To add strength they moved away from the attachment of the center disc to the drop center (called "well welded") and adopted attachment along the outer rim ("ledge welded"). Stu McMillan
