Figured somebody here might know: I recently inherited a big stack of old USGS maps, mostly owned by a man who surveyed a lot of timber land in Western Washington years ago. I love old USGS maps, so I'm going through them all and sorting them out. I noticed that some are marked "Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army, Tactical Map", dating from the WWII time period. In one case I have both the "tactical" and the presumably civilian version of the same quadrangle (Dungeness) based on the same surveys and same aerials. Aside from the style of lettering and the way the roads are drawn, I can't see any different information on the two different versions. Any map experts out there who know what a "tactical" map was.
