I've found a firmer backer is better to a sharp detail line. The real soft backers will not allow you to get in the very start of the edge and you'll burn through about a 1/4" out before getting it right.

The firmer durablock type or or these is what I used.

I had some in the 3 inch size and belt sanded them to a wedge. They are nice as you can put a 1/4" bolt and sleeve to give yourself a nice handle, gives you good control over it. Marty nailed it as you don't want to run the same line. I start at the inside edge and work out. Half lap and continue. Then go the opposite direction , 90 degrees from the prior angle. A good light and clean with a sponge and dry off to see the shine.

I used this method on the cut and buff too on those areas. Louvers are the worst.

I used adhesive sandpaper on the roll and just cut it to size. They DO make 500 grit in that and autobodystore.com has it.
