For a long time the ferries were highly subsidized out of gas tax money, which led to way too many people thinking they could have the best of both worlds by living on an island and commuting to the city to work. A lot of them still do, but it's not nearly as cheap as it used to be. Plus, even if you can afford it, you have to wait for the ferry, which is sometimes a long wait at rush hour, and sometimes they don't run at all if it's too windy.
When I was a kid there were plans drawn up to built floating bridges to all the islands. The one to Vashon was going to go from Three Tree Point, which was near our house. The only one from that scheme that actually got built was the one across Hood's Canal.
