But you will need a heavier than usual machine. I use an "industrial duty" Singer from the 50s. Not a real Industrial machine, just the Binford 6000 of the home style ala 50s.
Plus heavy thread, that is one advantage of the heavier machines. Mine can handle a #18 needle w/ upholstery thread. Find some heavy fabric or vinyl to practice on.
I sewed my own out of vinyl. Use an old seat cover for a pattern. Save those little steel clips, I don't know if they are available. Or leave a larger selvedge around the seat, and use hog rings.
(But I used to have a REAL industrial machine for upholstering custom furniture, back when I made furniture for a living. Sharing knowledge here, gained at the school of hard knocks.)
