Yes it keeps the oil put of the tracta and grease out of the pumpkin. I thought it was behind the bushing but it has been a couple years since I had one apart. I recall when the bushing wears and it will then the seal gets pushed down and leaks. Eventually your knuckle will start dripping grease as the grease turns more like oil. I often wondered about finding a bearing to replace the bushings both axle and spindle side but the reality is a lockout hub will almost eliminate bushing wear.
