The point is to allow some room for expansion when the bearing heats up which will result in the proper amount of bearing pre-load.
There is no way for the average guy to measure pre-load, only end-play. Thus we are left with the manufacturers' recommendations to back the nut off 1/6 turn after all the slack is taken up. Surely, they must have known something. Or, were they just wrong for the past 100 years and hate to admit it?
I read with interest the article about using specialized equipment to induce measured pre-load in heavy duty equipment and the anecdotal information about the resulting improvements. But, where is the reference for inducing pre-load in 60 year old light-duty trucks maintained in home shops?
My take on the article regarding the benefits of pre-loading wheel bearings is that someone is trying to sell the trucking industry some expensive new equipment.
