I hear what you are saying.
That hole up the center of the filter seals around the stand pipe in the canister at the very top of the pipe. Some filters have a rubber grommet to seal against the pipe. Most filters, by design, seal against the pipe as they get crushed and squeezed by the hemispherical perforated dome under the lid. This was the original design of the Deluxe filter. It relied upon a reasonably tight fit that got tighter as the lid was screwed down. The rubber grommet style came later and is not a Deluxe design. I have seen some of the grommet styles that cannot fit tight against the stand pipe and the steel that the grommet fits into will not allow any crush. If the grommet is loose at all, oil will bypass the filter.
I know Vintage says to remove filter media to allow a looser fit. Where do you think they source their filters from? I personally do not think it is a good idea especially if the correct alternative exists. Now, if Baldwin has switched to sourcing their filters from the same manufactures that have consolidated the sizing to a one-size-fits-all, then I am glad I stocked up on the older correct sized filters.
