I have a 4bt in my Jeep TJ and have done a few diesel swaps. A few things come to mind as a caution. Since the inception of the XJ all the cherokees are a unibody construction, meaning no frame. This is not impossible to overcome but makes for a bit more fabrication than a similar vehicle with a frame.
Paul is correct the tilt on a GM adapter is 8º.
Choose a transmission you want. Then buy your engine accordingly. Don't change trans mfg. or type mid project, it is very expensive to go from an engine that had an auto trans to a manual trans application.
In a vehicle the size of a cherokee a NP231 with a SYE will be plenty strong as long as the t-vase is in good shape.
Weight, the engine weighs about 850lbs. The TJ coil springs were way too soft (Cherokee springs are about the same spring rate.) I ended up using 79 Ford Bronco springs to handle the weight.
Axles;
While the D30 may work as a street queen the brakes are woefully inadequate, and the engine/vehicle weigh will likely surpass the axle weight rating.
D35 rear,,,,,lets not even waste time talking about it.
