I have soldered floats up. It's very easy to do. One surprising thing is that the heat of soldering expands the air/fumes inside and keeps blowing the solder out. The solution is to drill a small hole in a convenient place, or leave the last little bit of the crack un-soldered. When most of it is soldered, let it cool down. Then quickly solder up that last little bit or that vent hole before the whole thing has a chance to heat up much. Try not to glop on too much solder or it will affect the weight and the float level adjustment will be off.
