Although a fuul drum of cable looks nice, it may not be the best depending on required line pull.
The following information comes from my Braden Winch manual which is for the HU8A. There is no data for older winches such as MU-2, however the physics remain the same.
Layer # Feet of cable Pounds of Pull
#1 15' 8000
#2 34' 6700
#3 55' 5765
#4 79' 5060
#5 107' 4510
Based on 3/8 cable
Thus a full winch drum will not have the power that a drum with less layers will have. The cable should be loaded taking into consideration the worst case/most power required for the job....no more.
You can view this information at www.paccarwinch.com Braden is a division of Paccar winch
