Yesterday I spoke with Mr. Phillips at Phillips Performance, about his aftermarket camshaft for the flathead 230. He was hesitant to recommend that I buy the cam. In fact he felt I might be happier using the stock camshaft, because he feels that during really low-rpm crawling off-road (around 700 -900 rpm), the engine won't be running as smoothly with the aftermarket cam as it would with the stock one. I took this to mean that the truck would lurch back and forth some.
I also talked to Vintage Power Wagons about their hi-performance camshaft, since they deal with Power Wagons every day. They indicated that they've sold many of them over the years, and never had a complaint.
About 70% of my driving time is on-the-road, 30% is off-road.
If any of you have installed either the Phillips or Vintage Power Wagon camshaft, please let me know what you think of their performance on- and off-road, especially in the low-rpm range.
Thanks,
Matt
