Either one of the splined caps at the axle end has gone (easy) or the front diff / drive is in pieces somehow (hard).
Best course is just to swap out the front axle since any technical fix would be more hassle than the truck is worth. I see other posts suggesting it be parted out, but really ALL the money in Command Car stuff is in the body, panelling, and accessories behind the firewall so it wouldn't net you much.
In your position I'd be looking for a winch model weapons carrier with a blown or tired engine and just swap your good components onto that un-butchered frame, keeping the rest for spares. I'm not sure you'd really need a two speed transfer but it sounds like a winch would come in handy for you. I'm sure there's a post here or on the WW2 Dodge Forum from someone who has a WC52 frame and needs to see it go to a good home.....
