My Irish ancestors were very similar. My Great X2 Gparents came with almost nothing; they only wanted an opportunity. He worked as a groom and she a ladies maid in NYC until they saved enough to homestead on the Great Plains in a sod house - on their own land, which was their dream from back in the old country.
