Turbines have one speed at which they're extremely efficient, but the efficiency drops off quickly as you go anywhere away from that speed. Piston engines are about equally efficient over a wide range of speeds and power levels, although of course they have an optimum speed as well. I could see a small gas turbine in a hybrid car running at ideal speed whenever needed to charge the battery, but driving a vehicle directly where you need a good 3:1 speed range out of the engine... the inefficiency kills you.
