I would stay under the maximum rating of the gauge to be on the safe side. I think the 6 volt amp gauges were 50 amps, which I would think will supply plenty of power for a standard flat fender. Another option, since the ammeters measure amperage through the connected wires, maybe just not connect anything that may carry more amperage than the gauge is rated for. I do not know how practical this is though.
