In the old days they did everything with friction tape, including entire wiring harnesses on industrial panel boards. I suspect they solved the stickiness problem by dusting it all over with something once the assembly was done. I've also seen a lot of old coils that were just wrapped with cambric, probably uncoated, and then varnished. You definitely want a cloth tape of some sort, to conform to all the curves.
