A word about 4.5 or 3.9, Cummins ceased to build the 3.9 engines as new at the end of 2009. In keeping with our standard of offering new engines, we changed to the all electronic 4.5 Cummins which is the engine that replaced the 3.9. The cost is actually less for the 4.5 if being purchased through Cummins. Reason; the 3.9 is only offered as a Cummins Re-Con engine since being phased out as new due to federal guidelines. Since it is a rebuilt engine, they tack a hefty core charge onto the bottom line if you don't have a rebuildable core to exchange. This makes the cost of a rebuilt 3.9 a little more than a 4.5 purchased outright. We still do an occasional 3.9 in the 130 HP 4BTA format. The Re-Con engines have the same warranty as a new one which is a good thing if one prefers to pay the additional core charge to obtain it. As far as installation, about tip for tap. Really easy install in an M37, a few more issues to deal with in a Power Wagon, but well worth it in my opinion. The 4.5 is a fly by wire set up, really nice when you consider you can mount the electronic fuel pedal literally anywhere you desire. We take them off the transmission hump and put them back down at floor level, have not had anyone yet that didn't savor that option. HP options as high as 170 out of the box, the ones we have installed are 160. Electronic common rail fuel system is quieter, more responsive, and offers around 18% higher torque. Night and day difference in 4.5 and 3.9. I would base my decision on the planned end use for the vehicle.
