They are heated and dropped on. You can heat it and slide it around 1/6th of a turn.
See, the worn teeth are at three places on the ring gear, where the pistons hit TDC. Rotating it 1/6th turn puts new teeth into the high stress areas.
I don't know if I would do it to a gear that s skipping already, but I have done it to gears that are visible worn.
