Does the heater in these trucks...

Hey guy I'm trying to decide if i want to hook up the heater or not. As of right now the previous owner bypassed it. I live in a desert climate and during the winter it does get cold but as a Whole its warm for the most part. My question is do these heaters put significant heat into the cab even if the motor is not blowing? I know the core would still circulate through the cab. Also defrost would be nice to have. My thoughts for now is that i may have the core gone through and have a working motor ...then if i decide to use it i will just simply plum it in.
