I did the same once played along the buyer sent a nice official looking Wells Fargo check in a cardboard envelope by ups all that was in the envelope was the check.So I emailed the buyer back and told him or her that I would take it to the bank and let them know when it cleared. The buyer emailed the next day and said the check cleared and funds were drawn out of his account. I still had the check and dident go to the bank yet. So the next day I took it to my bank and they asked me if I wanted to cash it I told them I just wanted to know if it was any good and told them the story they told me to leave it and they would check it out buy the time I got home the bank called and said the check was bogus and the wanted the envelope that it came in
