Air compressors are tough loads to start, especially piston-type units. All the bigger ones are screw compressors these days -- no pulsations, quieter, smoother, much easier on the motor and electric supply, and provides cleaner air. We have a "small" 40 HP one in the Mine Tour and it's required no maintenance for 10 years. The real mines have 500-1000 HP units.
