There is a tool "Arbor 41-A-338" that is placed inside the idler gear assembly to hold the shims in place to prevent damage during installation of the idler shaft. You can use a round wood dowel cut to the length of the assembly that will get pushed out when installing the shaft. It just has to be small enough to exit the shaft hole, you don't want it too loose, so you may need to lathe one. Place tension on it when driving the shaft in or it may shoot out.
Once you have the assembly in place and the nut torqued, check the gear for side-to-side and end play. If you have that, you need to add more shims.
