Glad it fired up. It could be two things that cause the high amps: low charged battery or the little wire at the rear of the generator that connects the two fields has gotten bare and needs recovered - it rubs on the housing. If you have no other wiring connected except what you have in the diagram, if the amps don't reduce after charging the battery, check the generator.
As the old material covered wire degrades, some guys just patched it up, probably what you had with different wires and tape.
