DOT 5 is silicone oil. It can't absorb water. DOT 3 is glycol. Any water that gets into a DOT 3 system mixes with all the brake fluid and rusts everything equally. Any water that gets into a DOT 5 system ends up in the lowest point, usually a brake line along the frame, and rusts out that spot quickly.
