Thanks, I (almost) always check the archives. I guess I was one-track thinking about the problem.
Anyway, I found an entry by a guy who made a tool from a piece of sheet metal with a slot cut in it. This was exactly what I was thinking of doing. The finger on each side of the slot can be used to hold back the spring loaded washer.
I may be having a problem because the spring tension is still pretty strong. On the other door, I noticed the springs seemed much weaker. Without the interference of the springs, the job would be easy. The springs just prevent rattles.
Another hint: take only one door apart at a time.
