And remember when the parts stores all had machine shops in the back? If they didn't have what you needed in stock, the machinist could probably make it, or at least tell you what would work in its place.
Before Checker and Auto Zone and all of that - places that are geared toward do-it-yourselfers - parts stores closed at 5 p.m. weekdays, were open till maybe noon on Saturdays, and were always closed on Sundays. Other than those hours, you were S.O.L...
