You can still get 30W, it's what a lot of small engines use still, that said most also recommend the multi-viscosity if you are using them in colder climates.
I don't think you'll have any issues with a 10w30, but my take on Synthetics is this:
There are plenty of tests out there that show synthetic is better in every way then conventional oil, it's just science. But for most normal engines that see regular maintenance that extra is mostly lost. A conventional oil, changed at the usual intervals will give you plenty of years of life. The extra .2 mpg or 10,000 miles you might get probably aren't worth all the extra money.
However, if you have a high performance, hard use, or turbocharged engine, I like the added protection, and many already come with synthetic from the factory. There the improved performance is benefical, and maybe even necessary.
It's like high octane gasoline, it may be better but if the engine isn't designed to use it, or isn't being pushed hard enough to need it, then the extra octane is just wasted money.
I like to run synthetic in my newer car now that it's out of warranty because I double the oil change intervals which makes it at worst the same as using conventional oil with conventional changes.
