Post WWII and Korea saw extensive changes in our inventory. Generally speaking, the "M" prefix was used to identify tactical vehicles and equipment as the Army upgraded and modernized from WWII. I think it was done to make it easy for us Property Book Officers. It it had an "M" it went to the field. No "M" and it stayed on the pavement in garrison.
