Mike I have a 453t in my 57 W300, it is a bit too long, I had to push the radiator forward about 5" and my bellhousing takes up most of the firewall. I have been a heavy diesel mechanic for a long time and I will agree the two strokers are fine as a novelty for short drives but the noise will get to you on long trips. There is no quieting a two stroke Detroit the noise comes from everywhere. I am not complaining just say it how it is. Its like a symphony different parts contribute different noises and at varying pitches all combined to make the beautiful song a Detroit sings. There is an old saying, Detroit diesel is the fastest way to convert #2 diesel fuel into noise.
Mike that power unit this engine came from would have a stationary or a load governor not a limiting speed governor for road use. Good thing is the governors are not too hard to accomplish Depending on your use the Spicer trans may work if you don't have a big load. The gear spacing is rather wide for such a narrow power band and limited rpm range. I'm using a clark OD trans with a 3 speed splitter. Here is a video of another truck with the same engine, trans and splitter combination I have. You can hear how loud the engine can some times. I am working on installing an air starter on mine.
