And old guy I knew who used to have a business towing big rigs over Lookout Pass in the winter (Dodge content: using a WC62 he bought war surplus virtually unused) told me that most of the time if they were struck he could get them un-stuck without even having to winch them, just by sprinking a little smelter slag (from the Bunker Hill smelter) on the ice. He'd always keep a small pile in the back of the WC. He claimed slag beats regular sand any day for traction. Of course the EPA "remediated" the slag pile so you can't get to it any more.
