The lanolin is the key. We used it on sail boats. It doesn't wash off, but it's basically the same as covering something with any grease.

Practical Sailor did a test and one of the best rust preventatives was Vaseline. But, I wouldn't want to cover my whole truck with it, not that I would want to with lanolin, diluted with mineral spirits or not.
