Having spent the first half of my life on the wet side of the mountains, I can't emphasize enough the issues with rust there. Even with no salt on the roads, anything that's sat out for any length of time will be covered with moss and have small trees and large bushes growing through it and out of it. Whole houses, much less trucks, are hidden in fields under clumps of blackberries. Underneath all the compost will likely be a mixture of rust and paint flakes that still holds the shape of the steel that was once there. Far and away the worst M37 I ever saw for sale was from Gray's Harbor. The rustiest truck I have is a 1952 Reo M35 that came off the Tulalip Indian Reservation. It had bushes 10' tall growing up THROUGH the doors. I bought it for the front and rear winches, and good tires. Even the frame and non-oily parts of the gearboxes are a rusty mess, and the body is complete junk. All the wiring is also junk because the metal-shell connectors are rusted to bits.
People who haven't lived on the wet side of the mountains don't appreciate what the rain forest does to anything made of wood or steel, and how quickly it does it. The usual expedient of throwing a blue tarp over it only serves to make it easier to get the top layer of compost off.
On the "showing up with a trailer" dilemma, I suppose one way of playing that game is to drop the trailer some distance away, and show up appearing to be less interested.
