I was thinking at first it was Kettering, but then I was thinking that since it was Mr. Kettering who developed the series of big high-compression V8s in the 1950s called the "Kettering engines" that took advantage of high-test gas that was available then, it seemed like too much time passed between the electric starter and the 455 V8 for the same guy to have invented both, but I guess not. Must have been quite a career.
