Years ago, it was common practice everywhere. You bought a battery and told to come back in a couple of hours. The mechanic (NOT TECHNICIAN) would take a new, empty battery from the shelf over to the basin where the acid was kept. He would put on a rubberized apron and fill the cells (WHAT?? NO GLOVES??) with fresh acid from a gallon container using the rubber tube attached to it. When full he would cap it and rinse it off. He would take his battery carrier and hook it to the battery then carry the whole thing to the charger. Put the battery down on the table, remove the carrier, remove the caps and hook it up. Set the voltage and timer and walk away to do something else while it cooked. Did it too many times.
