Engines will often run quite awhile after they lose oil pressure before they self-destruct.
There was a guy around here who would run a Chevy six cylinder without an oil pan to show the "amazing" lubricating qualities of his engine oil additive.
Smoking from the exhaust probably just means that oil splashed up by the crank is getting past the rings. Nothing to do with oil pressure.
I'd quit running the thing while you are ahead and resign yourself to tearing into it. Otherwise, you may find yourself looking for another engine to rebuild.
