Hi all,
First - thanks to everyone who provided suggestions to my timing question. I really appreciate it, and learned a bunch from the ideas.
In the end the solution was the coarse adjustment on the back of the distributor. The distributor on my engine (from a 54-56 C-series, from t137.com) only had a single tab, not a gear, so it could only be out 180 degrees. Removing the distributor and rotating it on the plate allowed me to sent the timing in the proper range. Note that it might be possible to make this adjustment without removing the distributor, but you might have to bend your wrench a bit to do so.
The timing fix resolved my backfire when going from idle to high revs.
So on to other problems...thanks to all.
