Lonnie,

Full floating rear axles carry the weight of the truck on the hub and wheel bearings, not the axle shaft itself. The axle shafts are flanged and can be removed with the truck still resting on its tires and wheels. Semi floating axles rely upon the axle shaft to carry the weight through a single wheel bearing. The axle shafts cannot be removed from the truck without removing the wheel and brake drum. This is one feature that makes the old Power Wagons so heavy duty. Even the W100 1/2 tons of the 1960's were equipped with full floating rear axles. Today, 1/2 and even 3/4 tons are commonly found with the less than desirable semi floaters. I am not real familiar with the Power Giant W100s from 1957 through 1960. Weren't these also equipped with full floating rears?

Clint
