5-digit or lower. In jr. high I contacted my best friend by saying "Operator, get me 566 please." McGee's Drug Store was "Number 1"
In Houston there was a "Prescott" exchange on the southwest side. Thus the numbers were two letters followed by 5 digits such as "PR2-7775"
I have seen lots of PW pictures with an alphanumeric phone number on the door for some business or other. Hey how about that tune "PEnnsylvania6-5000"
