Steve,
I have seen the golden days of USA steel and shipyards and it was wonderus. As polluting and dangerous as they were, it was still a sight to behold to see 30,000 tons of ship rise out of the water on a drydock. All gone now. Even the Long Beach Naval Shipyard has closed down. Whats left in the US is a pathetic handfull of yards on the east coast.
Worked on a little minesweeper once. Six packard engines all running full bore inside a tiny engine room. Now that was music. A little loud, but fun!
I better get my shawl and rocker and go sit in the corner. :-)
