I am sorry to hear about this turn of events. This one is especially painfull because it was a unselfish labor of love on your part. Sounds like you had a first class get together in the making.
I used to work with my Father-in-law who dabbled with organizing conventions for 10 years around the country. The term "Put you money where your mouth is" applied to this business. Lots of people had good intentions for showing up but we found that only about 30% would actually be there. Because of our low numbers, we were forced to book second class accomodations. After arriving at one High-rise hotel, we found that the hotel was in bankruptcy. No soap, no towels, some beds only had three legs and there was broken beer bottle glass everywhere. We made it through that year but a freak blizzard hit our next years convention and pretty much put us out of business. It was just too much work anyway.
I hope you can take something positive from this experience, even if its just a laugh.
