Crosslinked polyethylene has fibers running in different directions as opposed to linear polyethylene which has the fibers running in one direction like wood fibers. If the linear polyethylene takes a significant impact it can develop cracks that run along the grain of the fibers. The crosslinked is much stronger and tends to not split when hit.
