Modern fuel is hard on old rubber components. Replace the fuel pump or rebuild with a modern diaphragm, and whils you're at it pull all the fuel hoses and replace them too as they can fail, swell internally, leak, draw air, give you all sorts of problems.
It was probably the parking angle that let the sump fill up - in 'normal' operation with a leaking diaphragm you get an eggcup full of fuel in the sump and them air gets in and the fuel level drains back instead.
