power steering on WM300 -- rhetorical question

I read a lot about people wanting power steering on WM300's.
Is it really possible that Dodge used a steering box / pump unique to the WM series, or was this some sort of adaptation of an 'off the shelf' unit that was common to other trucks (either Dodge or others)??
It sure seems odd that Dodge would have a custom unit for the small volume of WM series trucks that had it....
