The 305 was the destroked 340 Trans Am engine due to cubic inch restrictions. Screamed like a banshee.
The 340 is the unsung hero of the early to mid 1970's for racing. It is a far better engine than the small block Chevy for performance. The "How to Hot Rod Small Block Mopar Engines" gives a good accounting of the 340 engine in racing.
