You can find info on the differences between the 318A and 318LA at: http://www.allpar.com/mopar/318.html Scroll down to the middle of the page, or search for Identifying LA Series V-8 engines.

It looks like the 318A has 2 bolts hloding the valve cover on and the 318LA has 5 around the edge.
