The part about the black cook was correct, and he later died when a different ship he was on was sunk. At that time the Navy was very segregated and the only position available to a black man were that of a cook and/or steward, the latter being the ones that served the officers in the wardroom. In later years the steward positions were usually held by Filipino sailors.
