That's almost right. The stubby polle directly under the pole part way up isn't a pike, it's a DeadMan.
Years of discussion have gone on trying to decide if it's called that because the man operating it will be a dead man if the pikes crap out.
A gin pole is set independent from a truck, and has 360° of tip motion available when 3 or 4 guys are used. A 35 foot ginpole can set a 90 foot pole into the hole, and if the crew is worth a damn they can pull the gin from the pocket and lay it down without much effort using the 90 as a gin.
