Its common out on the West Coast to use Soda blasting to clean up log structures after building and later in life when the coatings have failed. The process removes mildew and surface staining from logwork prior to both interior and exterior finishing. Soda is relatively gentle but it there are bad areas, you will have repairs to do. Local availability of rental or contrators may decide if this will work for you.
