When you break the bead, you will know it. The tire comes completely loose from the rim.
I have a tire hammer which is sort of like a combination sledge hammer and the wide blade of a pick. It can take a lot of work to break the bead, even with the correct tools. There's videos of a guy using a tire hammer on Youtube. Just search "split ring" or something like that, as I remember.
Since you won't be changing many tires, it's just better to take them to the tire shop.
